Tips for Growing the Best Citrus in Phoenix

Growing the Best CitrusNothin’ beats citrus fresh from the tree and, in Phoenix and low desert areas, now’s the time when those sweet little gems fall from the tree with nary a touch.  We’re lucky (and, in a month or two, not so much…those of you with citrus trees know what I’m talking about!) to have fresh lemons, tangerines and oranges right in our desert backyard.

But with citrus, a little knowledge goes a long way!  If you’re struggling with existing trees or thinking of growing new ones, check out the Citrus Clinics offered by the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension Maricopa County Master Gardeners.

Not only will you learn how to plant, water, fertilize, and prune your citrus and other fruit trees from expert growers and U of A faculty, you’ll learn how to manage pests and diseases, too.  The best part?  Tasting all the available varieties so you know which ones to pick up at the nursery.

By the way…growing limes in Phoenix is nearly impossible because, believe it or not, our winters are too cold.  For those of us who like our margaritas and fresh salsas…sigh…
