Going Native: Xeriscape at Bass Pro Shop

Native Landscaping at Bass Pro ShopA quick glance at this photo and you might think “WOW! What a great home!”  But it’s not someone’s home.  Any ideas?  Here’s a clue:  I grew up in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, but I’m not exactly a fisherman.  Nor am I angling to be one.  I don’t hunt either.  Unless, of course, you count my on-going quest to mow down Bermuda grass.

Well, just the mention of Bass Pro Shops starts my avid outdoorsman husband drooling.  It’s not just the retail therapy he gets either.  It’s the whole experience.  Known for the extensive research that goes into every store, Bass Pro Shops prides itself on bringing the outdoors in.  So a store in Minnesota looks like Minnesota.  And the store in Las Vegas (shown here) looks like Las Vegas…minus the glitz and glam of The Strip!

Just as they’ve done here in Las Vegas, Bass Pro Shops takes great care in landscaping the outside of the store.  A simple design combined with native plants–even the skeleton of a Saguaro–keeps the parking area from looking like a sea of hot asphalt.  But you don’t have to hit Vegas for a look.  Check out the Bass Pro Shop in Mesa at the 202 & Dobson.  It’s a great example of how one retailer walks the walk with desert landscaping!
